It is one of those articles that opens one’s mind to a different perspective one never thought of before and thus one has an Aha! moment. It is a short 24 pager which I initially assumed would be a boring read by a law professor, but it turned out to be an outstandingly cogent article argued with such lucidity that one became a convert to the thesis expounded by Katharina Pistor by end of the article. The article is available in the following link: I was curious so I went in search of that original article by Katharina Pistor. I was reading a Bloomberg columnist (Andy Mukherjee) article, which referred to some Colombia law professor’s article about Big Tech (Google, Facebook, Amazon etc) and their capture of big data to the detriment of markets (and individuals). One such came in a roundabout way to me recently. In one of my earlier reviews, I had mentioned how one can get book ideas from many sources. The Starblood Trilogy was voted best horror release of 2014 by The Three Bookateers. Prizes - Starblood was nominated for the Commonwealth Book Prize in 2013 Carmilla won the Horror Author of the Year (2013) (Horror Fans Asylum) and FearVenture Author of the Year 2014 As Jef Withonef of Houston Press once said - "You do not read her books, you survive them." Her books are both extraordinarily personal and universally challenging. Fascinated by the Goth aesthetic and enchanted by threnodies of eighties Goth and post-punk music she evolved into the creature of darkness we find today. Her earliest influences as a teenage reader were Graham Masterton, Brian Lumley and Clive Barker mixed with the romance of Hammer Horror and the visceral violence of the first wave of video nasties. Carmilla grew up on a varied diet of horror. When not writing, she gets paid to hang out in a stately home and entertain tourists. New characters are drawn into Ms Voiez's web of storytelling, and each are different and fulfil a great purpose. The book is well written, with Gothic atmosphere, and it's a refreshing look at life, death, family, friendship, and the every changing world around us. She is passionate about horror, the alt scene, intersectional feminism, art, nature and animals. 'Black Sun' is the perfect conclusion to the Starblood Trilogy. A life long Goth, living with two kids, two cats and a poet by the sea. Carmilla Voiez is a proudly bisexual and mildly autistic introvert who finds writing much easier than verbal communication. At the same time it explains the dedication to this particular book and what letters from readers really mean to me. To create a utopian society, of all races and religions, and conquer the might of the Sundarbans. The eccentric Scotsman and the scientists on board the ship disembark to study this little-known environment, and to trace the journeys of the descendants of this society. Dense as the mangrove forests are, from Hamilton's point of view, it is only a little less barren than a desert. In the Sundarbans the tides reach more than 100 miles inland, and every day thousands of hectares of forest disappear only to re-emerge hours later. January 2001: A small ship, led by wealthy Scotsman Daniel Hamilton, arrives in the Sundarbans, a vast archipelago of islands in the mythical river Ganges, a half-drowned land where the waters of the Himalayas merge with the incoming tides of the sea. Blindsight is a novel by American writer Robin Cook, published by G. Shunned by her classmates and teachers for her limited English, Qian takes refuge in the library and masters the language through books, coming to think of The Berenstain Bears as her first American friends. Instead of laughing at her jokes, they fight constantly, taking out the stress of their new life on one another. In Chinatown, Qian’s parents labor in sweatshops. In China, Qian’s parents were professors in America, her family is “illegal” and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive. He is married with children, but harbors nostalgia for the time he spent with Elio as a college student. Several years later, Oliver works as a professor at a college in New Hampshire. They visit Michel's childhood home in the French countryside, and end their relationship amicably several weeks later. At a concert he meets an older man named Michel, and they begin a romantic relationship. The novel follows the lives of Samuel "Sami" Perlman, his son Elio Perlman, and Oliver, characters established in Aciman's 2007 novel Call Me By Your Name. Find Me is a 2019 novel by writer André Aciman. I read this after visiting De Smet, and it was so lovely to be able to fix this unabashedly romantic YA novel firmly in its real-life location. It's the last proper Little House book ("The First Four Years" doesn't count as far as I'm concerned!) and everyone is growing up or growing old and it's that moment of change from child/teen to adult, dependence to independence that makes it so poignant. She's a woman who knows she's loved and loves back wholeheartedly.īut the book is also bittersweet. The times spent with friends and family, and happy teaching experiences for Laura are also lovely to read. Almanzo's persistence in courting Laura, and the fact that he collected her every week in freezing winter weather from the first school she taught is beautiful. The book makes me happy inside, the gentle way that Laura and Almanzo become a couple and go out on rides together. It seemed eminently suitable to read before my own marriage. The reason for this? I think that "These Happy Golden Years" is the first book that I ever read in which a courtship and marriage was described in any detail - I was probably 8 or 9 on first reading of it. This is the book I read the night before I got married ten years ago. This full-colour, beautifully illustrated edition features all-new material with more than 1,600 pieces of art.
